Jane Dickson

Biography

Jane Dickson is a painter of urban life. She became known in the early ‘80s for her depiction of Times Square where she lived and worked from 1978 through 2008. Her vision has sprawled across America to include demolition derbies, carnivals, suburban homes, casinos, and highways. In 1981, Dickson organized “Messages to the Public” a Public Art Fund project, presenting artist designed works for SpectaColor’s 1 Times Square Billboard. In 2008 Dickson created a beloved series of 68 life-size mosaic figures of New Year’s Eve revelers installed in the Times Square subway stations. Dickson was an early member of the artist collective, Colab which presented the now legendary Times Square Show. She is married to the film director Charlie Ahearn with whom she collaborated on his seminal hip hop feature Wild Style. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and is included in the collections of 30 museums including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art. In 2015, The National Portrait Gallery-Smithsonian Institution acquired her Portrait of Fab Five Freddy from 1982.
