steven harvey fine art projects presents our fourth exhibition of work by Stuart Shils. Shils’s new works are paper-paintings made with collage along with several stage-set sculptures involving figuration and mythology.

For decades, Shils has been a devoted naturalistically oriented outdoor painter, looking ‘out there’ and exploring the appearance of things with paint on paper and panels. He worked on the street in Philadelphia and for many years In Ballycastle on the northwest coast of Country Mayo, Ireland and also in Italy for a cluster of summers.

More recently his gaze has turned inward and the landscape now reveals itself differently, more as evolving, sedimentary aggregate, an improvisational narrative rooted in the emotion of memory, fading and also recently hatched dreams, reflections on pieces of history and the residual traces of words from literature.

Two trips to Greece this past year opened huge imaginative windows in many directions. Shils teaches at PAFA in Philadelphia and at various venues around the country.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a small book, “an astronomer up late in her observatoryˆ which offers visual glimpses into some background for the paintings and collages.

There will be an accompanying installation of paintings by Seymour Remenick, Robert Kulicke, Edwin Dickinson, Paul Resika and others in the rear gallery.
