Clay

Beth Kaminstein Stanley Rosen Catherine White December 14 - January 14, 2023

SHFAP presents Clay, an exhibition of three ceramic masters, all of whom have shown previously with the gallery. From functional to sculptural applications their work demonstrates extraordinary aspects of quality in making.

Beth Kaminstein, practices what has been termed “color field” ceramics. Her sculptures play with aspects of surface and mysterious form. Glazed color swirls and rains in shadowy configurations.  Kaminstein studied in the early 70s with Stanley Rosen at Bennington College. She and her husband Ron Levy ran a multi-faceted ceramics studio producing both functional and sculptural ceramics in NYC in the 70’s, including making clay tandoor ovens for commercial kitchens. Since moving to the Florida Keys in the late 80s, Kaminstein has maintained a studio by the sea (now moved across the highway to higher ground) with classes for potters while creating tableware for a Japanese restaurant in her community. She has been involved with multiple layers of social engagement working with schools and the local arts commission. She has shown most recently at SHFAP, Cross-Mackenzie Gallery in Washington DC, and The Sanger Gallery in the Studios at Key West. New sculpture by Kaminstein is presented in Clay.

Stanley Rosen is a 96-year-old ceramic master working in N. Bennington, Vermont.
After teaching ceramics at Bennington College for over thirty years, during which time he refrained from exhibiting his work, in 2016, Rosen had a one-person show at the Bennington Museum.  Following that, Rosen’s work has been exhibited in three shows at SHFAP in 2022, 2021, and 2017. In 2018, an installation of Rosen’s work was presented by SFHAP at the NADA fair in Miami. During this time, The Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Art and Design, NY, acquired examples of Rosen’s work.  In Clay, a group of early sculptures from the late 1950s is exhibited for the first time. These stem back from when Rosen worked at Greenwich House Pottery.

Catherine White is a lifetime artist/potter from a family of artists. She works in Virginia alongside her husband, Warren Frederick. After studying in Europe and being influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition, White uses a wood-burning kiln to produce gorgeous shadowy ceramic finishes creating sculpture and paintings with hand-sourced clays.  In this exhibition, she exhibits a group of works around the motif of circles and spheres. White last showed her work at SHFAP in December of 2021.
